Aaron Sachs

Aaron Sachs ( born July 4, 1923 in New York City ) is an American jazz saxophonist ( tenor and alto saxophone), flutist and clarinetist, bandleader and composer of swing and modern jazz.

Life and work

Sachs began twelve years old to deal with music and taught himself the saxophone. At the beginning of his musical career he played in swing bands - sponsored by Benny Goodman - with Babe Russin 1941 Red Norvo 1941/42, Van Alexander 1942/43, again at Red Norvo 1943/44, and Benny Goodman 1945 /46. Due to illness he was 1948/49, musically inactive. After Sachs, who had meanwhile moved closer to the bebop worked, partly as a freelance musician, partly at Earl Hines 1952/53, with Tito Rodriguez and Louie Bellson 1959.

In 1948 he married the singer Helen Merrill.

In the 1950s he also led a separate group with which he, among other things disks recorded and toured for Dawn. In it, Jimmy Cleveland, Joe Roland, Dick Garcia and Osie Johnson played. In 1955 he was at the legendary concert of the Modern Jazz Society - part A Concert of Contemporary Music, which was initiated by John Lewis, Gunther Schuller and Jay Jay Johnson.

In the 1960s, Sachs dealt more with Latin jazz and worked with Machito, Tito Puente and Tito Rodriguez. Aaron Sachs wrote the hit song " El Mundo De Las Locas " for him.

Aaron Sachs was in the course of his career except those named in recordings with Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan, Chet Baker, Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Heywood, Billie Holiday, Red Norvo, Gene Krupa, Anita O'Day, Cozy Cole, Charlie Shavers, Tom Talbert and Charlie Ventura involved. He is regarded as one of the first bebop clarinetists.
