Abadan (Turkmenistan)

Abadan is a city in the province Ahal in southwestern Turkmenistan.

Geography

It is located 20 km northwest of the capital Ashgabat and 30 km north of the border with Iran. Abadan was founded in 1963 and has about 50000 inhabitants.

History

The original ( Russian ) name was Büzmeýin ( Russian: Бюзмейн ) until they renamed the then President of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov in October 2002.

Accident by explosion

On July 7, 2011, according to eyewitness reports, a large part of the city was destroyed by explosions at a munitions depot of the army. Thus, there should have been more than 1,000 deaths. A website has the number specified with 1,382. At 40 degrees Celsius heat to be launched from a munitions store several short-range missiles and they should have taken into houses, including schools and hospitals.
