Abades, Tenerife

Abades (Spanish Abbots ) is a village on the southeast coast of Tenerife in the municipality of Arico, between Poris de Abona and La Jaca, which was originally founded as a leper colony.

History

Leprosy was discovered late as a serious disease on the island. The first leper was to the north of the island, where the majority of the population lived, built. The bodies disposed of it, until the construction of a crematorium by throwing them near Santa Cruz into the sea. In 1943 was on the hill on Abades an entire village, " Sanatorio de Abona ," planned as a leper and started. You paid for the area 144,000 pesetas to the owner Don Ramon Peraza y Perez. The contract was signed at the notary Lorenzo Martinez Fuset on February 5, 1944. In the village there is a hospital, crematorium, many bungalows, administrative building with sea view, and a church in the Franco - typical style with a big cross on the top, which can already be seen away from very far, especially from the highway.

With new methods of treatment of leprosy was almost completely eradicated in the Canary Islands, and thus never finished this project. Until then, about 11 million pesetas were invested. Today it resembles a ghost town. The leper was declared a military area and used until 2000 from the 49th Infantry Regiment Tenerife for training in urban warfare. In 2002, the entire area was sold to Italian investors.

The church is still in good condition, and follower of Saint Lazarus, the patron saint of lepers, the altar is adorned with fresh flowers regularly. Abades is the result of a relatively new development: Past villages are located in the mountains. There it was much easier to get through the woods to the water, and partially deep tunnels were driven into the mountain to win the precious commodity. The former main road since then connects all villages.

1978, with the opening of the Reina Sofia airport and the connection via the TF-1 motorway, was an important year for the development in this field. The place " Los Abriguitos " ( The small accommodations ) was established under the leper colony " Sanatorio de Abona ," and many simple wooden huts were built around local "tourists", so the local people from the mountains who wanted to spend at sea the weekend to accommodate. In 1986, the Abades project was tackled. All wooden huts were a planned mass cremation for victims and a massive stone wall was built by the sea. In 1987 the chapel was built. In 1988, the motorway exit 18 its current form, and 1993 streets were paved and completed the tennis court and a small park.
