Abala (Niger)

Region

Abala is a rural commune and the chief town of the department Abala in Niger.

Geography

Abala lies in the Sahel at Dallol Bosso and is bordered to the north by the neighboring country of Mali. The neighboring communities in Niger are Tillia in the east, in the southeast Sanam, Kourfeye Centre in the south, southwest and Banibangou Filingue in the west. The municipality is divided into 45 administrative villages, 32 traditional villages, 72 hamlets, four bearing and five water points. The main town of the rural community is Abala, consisting of the administrative villages Abala Arabe I, II Abala Arabe, Abala Guirnazan, Abala Maidagi, Abala Moulela and Abala Toudou.

History

The main town Abala was founded in 1931 by immigrants from Filingue that their first homes at the waterhole Abale ( Tuareg for " gush " ) buildings. Settlers from Sanam laid in 1947 the villages Kourfa and Djakassa. The village Tabotakit (translated " between the dunes ") (" young rhino ' translated) in 1948 and the village Chimbarkawane established in 1955. These and other administrative villages were again starting points for the surrounding hamlets the plant. Abala 1964 received the status of an administrative post (French poste administratif ). The severe drought from 1968 to 1976 brought further settlement activity to a virtual standstill. The town was founded in 2002 as Kourfeye Centre and Sanam released from the Canton Kourfey and independent rural community. 2009 tried floods in many villages of the municipality of property damage, of which 7210 residents were directly affected. The administrative posts of Abala was removed in 2011 from the Department of Filingue and collected at the Department Abala.

Population

At the 2001 census Abala had 56,803 inhabitants. For the year 2010 75.177 inhabitants were calculated. About 80 % of the population of Abala were classified in a study of the French NGO ACTED as poor or very poor 2011. More than 81 % of the population had no access to latrines in the vicinity.

Economy and infrastructure

The community is located at the junction of the zone of Agropastoralismus of the South to the zone of pure pastoral economy of the North. By Abala the National Road 25, which connects the village with the neighboring communities Filingue and Sanam runs.
