Abalak is a department in the Tahoua region in Niger.

Geography

The Department is located in the center of the country. It consists of the township Abalak and the rural communities Akoubounou, Azèye, Tabalak and Tamaya. The eponymous capital of the department is Abalak.

History

The existing since the 1960s administrative posts ( post administratif ) of Abalak was removed in 1998 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the Department Tchintabareden and raised to an independent department. The structure of the department in communities exists since the year 2002. Previously, it consisted of the urban center Abalak and a residual zone. The 2013 appointed Prefect of Abalak is Abdou Salamou.

Population

The Department has Abalak 2012 255.914 inhabitants according to the census. At the 2001 census, there were 80 955 inhabitants. This corresponds to 2001 to 2012 to an average annual population growth rate of 10.5 % ( nationally: 3.9%).
