Abava River

The Abava ( German Abau ) is a river in western Latvia.

The river rises in a marshy area Lestene and flows in a straightened river bed, first to the north. Below Kandava the now meandering riverbed runs west to the confluence with the River Venta. On the Abava several rapids are caused by dolomite formations. The largest is Abavas rumba, one about two feet high waterfall at Sabile.

  • The largest tributaries are Viesata, Imula and Amula.
  • Because of the rapids the Abava is popular with tourists and water canoeists.
