Abay (town)
Abai ( Kazakh Абай; Russian Абай ) is a city in Kazakhstan, with around 35 602 inhabitants ( 2008). It is located in the Karaganda region, 30 kilometers southwest of the city of Karaganda.
Population
From the population is about 54 % Russian and 21 % Kazakhs, there are also a variety of other nationalities.
History
The city was founded in 1949 as a settlement Scherubaj - Nura ( Kazakh Шерубай - Нұра; Russian Чурубай - Нура ) was founded. The present name of the city since 1961. It was named after the Kazakh poet Abai Qunanbajuly.
Economy
The economy is characterized, as in most cities around the Karaganda mining.
