Abbadia San Salvatore

Abbadia San Salvatore is a municipality with 6528 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian region of Tuscany. It belongs to the province of Siena.

Geography

The place on the southern slopes of Monte Amiata stretches over 58.9 km ². It is located about 60 km southeast of Siena and about 110 km southeast of Florence. The summit cross of Monte Amiata is located in the municipality of Abbadia San Salvatore and was completed in 1910 with a height of 22 meters by Luciano Zalaffi.

Among the districts ( Frazioni ) include Rifugio Amiatino, Rifugio Cantore, Voltole and Zaccaria.

The neighboring municipalities are Castel del Piano (GR), Castiglione d' Orcia, Piancastagnaio, Radicofani, San Casciano dei Bagni, Santa Fiora (GR) and Seggiano ( GR).

History

743 the monastery of San Salvatore di Monte Amiata was founded. For this event also the name of the town is derived. Later, the Aldobrandeschi gained dominion over the place, then the family of the Orsini. 1782, the city was conquered by the church state and remained there until the Risorgimento.

  • Palazzo del Podestà from the 15th century, today the town hall of the place.
  • Santa Croce Church, 1221 emerged in 1791 destroyed by fire in 1801 and rebuilt.
