Abbas-Ali Amid Zanjani

Abbas - Ali Amid Zandschani, Persian عباسعلی عمید زنجانی, ( born March 30, 1937 in Zanjan, † October 30, 2011 in Tehran ) was an Iranian cleric and politician.

Career

The ethnic Azeri Zandschani was the first and only spiritual president of the University of Tehran. He had no secular academic degree and was on 27 November 2005, Research Minister in the cabinet of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appointed by Mohammad Mehdi Zahedi. Prior to his election, the President of the University has been selected by the teachers. After his installation as president of the University of Tehran, many students protested in front of the Central Library, where the celebrations were held for the office.

Zandschani was also a member of the Supervisory Board of the International Imam Khomeini University. He has published more than 40 books and 70 articles in national newspapers and magazines. He was further founder of the "Research Centre for studies and research on Islamic Science ".

During his tenure as President of the University Zandschani was repeatedly criticized by students and academics for its mismanagement. On 5 February 2008, he was replaced after three days ongoing, student-organized demonstration by the economist Farhad Rahbar.
