Abbesses (Paris Métro)

Abbesses is an underground station of the Paris Métro in the 18th arrondissement of Paris under the Butte Montmartre. The station is served by the metro line 12 and is approximately 36 feet below the earth's surface, making it the deepest station of the Métro network.

The station was taken on 31 October 1912 in operation, as the northern extension of line A from Pigalle was opened up to the station Jules Joffrin. On March 27, 1931, the line A was renamed in line 12. 2006 and 2007 the station was completely renovated.

In Abbesses is one to transfer to the funicular of Montmartre and Montmartrobus.

In 2011, ridership was 2,545,127 people.

Architecture

The metro station is equipped with two lying in a vault side platforms. Two spiral staircases and two elevators lead from one to the south of the platforms lying intermediate level to access level ( salle des billets ) at Place des Abbesses, on its eastern edge is the only entrance.

The covered staircase was designed in the style of Art Nouveau, designed by Hector Guimard and is a popular photo opportunity. The canopy was originally built for receipt of Métro station Hôtel de Ville in the Rue de Lobau 1974 moved from its former location on the Montmartre. Today it is one of two existing canopies of this type, the other is located at Porte Dauphine on line 2

Worth seeing is the very nearby " Mur des je t'aime ". On a bench in the small investment you can recover from the great stair climb, if you did not use the elevator.
