Abbeville County, South Carolina

Abbeville County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Abbeville. The name of the district derives from the French city of Abbeville.

Geography

The County is located in northwestern South Carolina, is bounded on the southwest by Georgia and has an area of 1324 square kilometers, of which 8 square miles is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Greenville County, Anderson County, Laurens County, Greenwood County, McCormick County and Elbert County ( Georgia). The county includes two defined for statistical purposes settlement areas ( Census-designated place ): Antreville and Lake Secession.

History

Abbeville County was formed on March 12, 1785 from the District 96. It was named after the French city of Abbeville.

Personalities

John C. Calhoun, 7th Vice President of the United States from 1825 to 1832 under Presidents John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, a longtime U.S. senator and secretary of state under President John Tyler, was born in the Abbeville County.
