The Roman Catholic monastery church of St. Anna im Lehel, the first rococo church in Old Bavaria and shaped the development of the religious architecture in Bavaria.

Location

The monastery church of St. Anna im Lehel (St. - Anna -Str. 21) is located in the center of the Lehel towards the Catholic parish church of St. Anna im Lehel.

History

1725 founded the Jerónimos in lowland forest left of the Isar River, which was later named Lehel, a monastery and took over the pastoral care for 2000 people, who were established there. Electress Maria Amalia laid in 1727 the foundation stone for the abbey church, which was built by the architect Johann Michael Fischer to 1733. The interior, on the Cosmas Damian Asam, Egid Quirin Asam, Johann Baptist Straub were involved in 1737 it was completed.

While the secularization of the Hieronymite was repealed in 1807 and vacated the convent building in 1808 barracks. The monastery church became a parish church. In 1827 the Franciscans took over ( OFM) the monastery, which they hold to this day.

When projecting the " St. Anne's suburb ", today's Lehel, the development of the monastic environment was configured. In order to strengthen classify the church in the upper-class buildings to show the solidarity with the old town and establish a visual link with the Ludwig street, was 1852/53 pre- hidden by August Voigt of the Church a neo-Romanesque twin-towered facade, which dreibögigen with its arcaded portal and the pyramidal completion the towers overlooked oriented at the University of St. Louis Church.

Through an air raid on 29 April 1944, the monastery church of St. Anna im Lehel was completely destroyed except for the outside walls. 1946 began the reconstruction. The twin-towered facade was demolished in 1948, the reconstruction of the interior dragged on until 1979. Constructed in 1968 Erwin Schleich the rococo facade, which he vorblendete before the bullet left the Voigt 's two towers. Behind the church gate is still a part of the original facade of 1772 visible. In this respect, the situation today is not the original from 1773 again, since the portal facade of the convent building jumps forward and is not on a level with her anymore, which is the type of baroque monasteries in Bavaria and the original situation.

Program and design

Johann Michael Fischer succeeded in his early work, a crucial novel solution in the space education: He merges longitudinal and centrally planned to a new type. He broke up the firmly established formal language of architecture of its time: instead of wall post wall tongues with fluted pilasters, raumverspannende trough vault solve the hemisphere domes from. The Stuckrahmung is used as a transition zone, which summarizes all the architectural elements rhythmically. The idea is that you want to share the sky.

To achieve this, Fischer has deliberately avoided right angles. The main room is designed oval and consists of two apsidenförmigen side chapels and four konchenformigen chapels in the corners that do not lie on a common diagonal axis. Located in the west apse of the main altar is reflected in a semicircular monk choir behind her.
