Abbey of Saint-Evroul

The Abbey of Saint - Évroult in Saint- Evroult -Notre -Dame- du- Bois, founded by the Holy Évroult d' Ouche († 706 ) under the name Abbaye d' Ouche.

The monastery was rebuilt in 1050 under the name of Saint- Évroult of the families Giroie and Grandmesnil; they received while supporting regional monasteries such as the Abbey Jumièges whose Filiam Saint- Evroult has now. Abbot Robert de Grandmesnil had 1061/62 flee the country to escape the wrath of the Duke; he went to Italy, where he founded the monastery of Saint Eufemia (Calabria ). Abt Serlon d' Orgères 1091 was Bishop of Sées. 1231 to 1284, the abbey was rebuilt.

In the 14th century, the church of the Abbey was decorated with sculptures. In the 15th century a new entrance and a wall was built around the property. In the 17th century a residential building was added in brick. In the wake of the French Revolution (1789-1799), the abbey was dissolved. The stones from the walls of the buildings were dismantled and used to build other buildings. 1802 broke the main building together. The ruins today consist of various architectural elements and give an overview of how the building looked like before. They have been classified as a monument historique in 1967 ( historical monument ).
