Abbey of Sainte-Trinité, Caen

The convent of Sainte -Trinité is common with the neighboring monastery of Saint -Etienne in Caen as Vollendungsbau Romanesque in Normandy.

History

The Abbaye aux Dames was founded by William the Conqueror in honor of his wife and cousin Reine Mathilde and built. The Abbess Cécile († 1126 ) was probably her daughter. The monastery building was used until the 1980s for various purposes, among others as a hospital. Today it is the seat of the Regional Council ( Conseil régional ) of Basse -Normandie region. On this occasion it was fully renovated.

The building material of the monastery, the Abbaye aux Hommes like and the castle of Caen is the bright sandstone of the area: The stone from Caen ( la Pierre de Caen ). In addition to the good static properties, it can be " like wood carving ", mostly producing a warm, bright atmosphere in the buildings.
