Abbey of St Genevieve

The Abbey of Sainte-Geneviève was a significant, on a hill, the Montagne Sainte -Geneviève, in Paris (5th Arrondissement ) next to the present parish church St- Étienne -du -Mont monastery founded, of which only some under preservation remains the centuries have survived.

The origins of the abbey extend to the 5th century when the Frankish king Clovis I the construction of the apostles Paul and Peter church dedicated Saintes Apôtres Pierre et Paul led, in the later patron saint of Paris, Saint Geneviève was buried.

The few surviving parts of the building of the abbey date from the 13th to the 17th centuries and were integrated into the prestigious Lycée Henri IV. From the former monastery church, which was destroyed in the 19th century, mostly to make room for the rue Clovis, only stands the bell tower.

Before the French Revolution, the architect Germain Soufflot had been entrusted with the construction of the monumental new monastery church, which now serves under the name Panthéon as a Hall of Famer.

Counted an important library, which preserved stocks today are located in the nearby Library of Sainte-Geneviève Among the treasures of the monastery.
