Abbey of St. Jean des Vignes

Saint -Jean -des- Vignes is a former monastery in the French Soissons in the Aisne.

The monastery was founded by Hugues le Blanc for Regular, who lived according to the Rule of Saint Augustine. 1076 was a confirmation of the foundation by Philip I. From the 13th to the 16th century, the Romanesque architecture of the monastery was replaced by new buildings Gothic, 1359 was a fixture of the monastery during the Hundred Years War.

During the French Revolution it came to the dissolution of the monastery and for the redevelopment of the monastery grounds in a barracks. In addition, the buildings were used as a quarry. The monastery church was finally destroyed completely by an explosion of the munitions depot.

Today, the two- tower facade of the former monastery church, parts of the cloister and the refectory of the monastery are still preserved. The site hosts temporary exhibitions of the municipal museum and an archaeological center.
