Abington Abbey ( Irish Mainister Uaithne; Anglis as Woney; . Owney ) is a former Cistercian abbey and in the city of Limerick in County Limerick on the banks of the river Mulkear, a tributary of the Shannon, near the cemetery of Abington.

History

The monastery was founded in 1196 in Wyresdale in Lancashire in England by Theobold Walter, Butler of Ireland and brother of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Hubert Walter, donated and moved to the east coast of Arklow before 1204. From 1205 there was a further relocation to Abington. Theobold Wolter was buried in 1206 in Abington. Mother monastery was either Furness Abbey or Monastery Savigny. The monastery belonged at any rate at the filiation of Clairvaux Abbey Primary. The Mulryan family had great influence on the monastery, which led to complaints of the Convention. 1540, the abbey was converted into a secular college, the provost was the last abbot John O'Mulryan. However, already in 1553 was Walter Aphoell the goods of the abbey, followed the 1562 Peter Walsh. The abbey was a convent until 1557. 1684 an abbot called from Abington again. In the 18th century the abbey was canceled and a manor house was built, which no longer exists, however.
