Abbo of Fleury

Abbo of Fleury, French Abbon de Fleury, Abbo Latin Floriacensis (* 940 or 945 in Orléans, † November 13, 1004 in La Réole, Gironde ) was next Gerbert the most important mathematicians of the European 10th century.

Life

Abbo was raised as a Benediktineroblate and students in the Benedictine Abbey of Saint- Benoit- sur- Loire ( Fleury ). Later he studied in Paris and Reims was 965 himself a teacher at the convent school of Fleury, where he - was elected abbot ( 988 ) - after staying in an English monastery Ramsey ( Cambridgeshire) ( 985-987 ). Abbo became involved in the dispute over the archbishopric of Reims - here was Gerbert of Aurillac († 1003) was elected the meantime Archbishop ( 991-996/98 ) - in favor of the re-established Arnulf (997 ) and followed also against the French King Robert II (996-1031) in whose marriage matters, the directives of the Pope. His zeal for the restoration of monastic discipline cost him his life. On November 13, 1004 Abbo was murdered by rebellious monks in the priory of the monastery La Réole Fleury. Also known as the historian monk Aimoin was Abbo students and has described his life. In his Vita Abbonis he worships the abbot as a saint.

Work

At writings of Abbo of Fleury have survived: letters, the Excerptum de gestis Romanorum Pontificum, a Carmen Acrostichum ad Ottonem imperatorem, the Passio sancti Edmundi, writings in the field of Trivium as the Quaestiones grammaticales, writings in the area of the Quadrivium with mathematical and computistical content as the Commentarius in cyclum Victori the Calculus of Victorius of Aquitaine. The principal work of the abaci doctor how Abbo himself called, was but the Computus vulgaris of 978 to the latter Abbo worked for over 25 years, the Computus contained the table of the Easter festival of the birth of Christ until the year in 1595.
