ABBYY

ABBYY ( BIT Software earlier ) is a software producer from Russia. He develops and markets applications of computer vision and computational linguistics. Flagship product is the market- leading desktop OCR FineReader.

The company was founded in 1989 by David Yang in Russia under the original name BIT software. First product was the dictionary application Lingvo. In 1997 it was renamed to ABBYY. 2011, the company had over 1,000 employees and nine offices in various countries, including the ABBYY Europe GmbH in Munich.

The name comes from Abbyy according to the company a theoretical (re) constructed proto-language of the languages ​​Hmong-Mien-/Miao-Yao-Sprachgruppe and means as much as sharp eye.
