Abdelwahid al-Marrakushi

Abdelwahid al - Marrakushi (* July 7, 1185 in Marrakech, † to uncertainly in 1228: Egypt) was an Islamic historian and scholar.

Biography

Al- Marrakushi was born under the reign of al - Mansur Almohadensultans Yaqub (reigned 1184-1199 ) in Marrakech. At the age of nine he went - probably not accompanied by his parents - to Fez to continue in the spiritual and religious metropolis of the kingdom of his studies. Ultimately, however, he commuted between the two cities back and forth. In 1206 he traveled to Andalusia, but returned three years after the defeat of the Islamic armies at Las Navas de Tolosa (1212) to Morocco. Probably in 1217 he embarked on a trip to Egypt and Mecca. The last years of his life were spent at home in Egypt, where he did not live to the phase of the gradual decline of the Almohad, but published his book on the history of the dynasty in 1224.

Work

He called his book Kitab al - mujib fi Talkhis akhbar ahl al -Maghrib ( German as: " An entertaining and instructive book on the history of the Maghreb "). In it, he described the transfer of power from the Almoravids to the Almohads as well as their heyday in a thoroughly readable manner with many anecdotes. He turned so that students who were already bored of academic subjects and, their dry performance. He probably came in personal contact with the about 20 -year-older philosopher Averroes ( Ibn Rushd ).

Assessment

His book is considered by the research to be relatively accurate and objective. The teachings of the dynasty 's founder Muhammad Ibn Tumart he described to the best of knowledge. Astonishment also caught his quite neutral, sometimes even positive portrayal of the deeds of the Almoravids, the Almohads deeply hated predecessor dynasty.
