Abderrahmane Sissako

Abderrahmane Sissako ( born October 13, 1961 in Kiffa, Mauritania ) is a Mauritanian film director and producer. He is considered one of the most famous filmmakers from Sub-Saharan Africa. Important themes of his films are globalization and the exile.

Life

Shortly after his birth in Mauritania Sissako moved with his family to Mali, the country of origin of his father. In 1980 he returned briefly to Mauritania before he studied in Moscow at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography 1983-1989. Beginning of the 90s he settled in France.

In 2003 he was a member of the international jury of the Berlinale. At the film festival of Cannes in 2000 he sat in the Short Film Jury in 2003 he was president of the jury of the Un Certain Regard, and in 2007 he main member jury.
