Abdou Diouf

Abdou Diouf ( born September 7, 1935 in Louga ) was the second president of Senegal ( 1981-2000 ).

Life

Diouf was dated 26 February 1970 to January 1, 1981 Prime Minister of Senegal and was Leopold Sedar Senghor's resignation after the president. In the elections of February 1983 and 1988, he was re-elected in 1988 with 73 % of the vote.

On 12 December 1981, Senegal agreed to under Diouf of confederation with Gambia under the name of Senegambia, which entered into force on 1 February 1982, but was stopped again at 30 September 1989.

Diouf was reelected in February 1993 with 58 % of votes for 7 years after the term of office of the President in the Constitution had been changed. In the 2000 election he was in the first round with 41.3 % to 30.1 % of the vote yet clear before the long-time opposition leader Abdoulaye Wade, finally defeated but in the runoff election on March 19, with 41.5 % to 58.5 % v. Wade. After the election defeat he handed on April 1, peacefully hand over power to his successor.

1996 Diouf was awarded the Grand Prix de la Francophonie de l' Académie Française. The ' FIBA Order of Merit ' he received in May 1999.

Since 2002, Diouf Secretary General is the Organization of la Francophonie.
