Abdoulaye Wade

Me Abdoulaye Wade ( * May 29, 1926 in Kébémer, Louga region ) was from 2000 to 1 April 2012, the incumbent president of Senegal until he handed the office of the current president Macky Sall.

Life

Wade studied law in France and was awarded his doctorate. In 1974 he founded the Democratic Party of Senegal (PDS ), a liberal party.

From February until May 1994 for conspiracy Wade sat in prison. After four defeats against the incumbent he won in the 2000 presidential elections against the incumbent Abdou Diouf and has since been president.

In the presidential elections in 2007, Wade was once again a favorite. On 28 February 2007 the incumbent was confirmed as per provisional result as head of state. Already in the first count reached the then 80 -year-old in all 35 electoral districts 55.7 percent, an absolute majority. The socialist opposition announced the challenge to the election results, while the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS ) looked at the conduct of the election as transparent and free.

Actually, the Constitution of the West African country provides for a maximum of two terms for the president. However, the Supreme Court found a loophole for Wade; therefore he was admitted in the presidential election for a third term. The opposition then called for protests, which were brutally suppressed by the police. Among the injured was also the presidential candidate Cheikh Bamba Dieye.

In the first round of the presidential election in February 2012, no candidate won an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 25, he was defeated by Macky Sall and congratulated this on election night victory. Some 300 international observers watched the election.

Abdoulaye Wade is the French Viviane Wade ( born 1932 ) married. Together they have two children: Karim Wade ( born 1968 ) and daughter Sindjely Wade.
