Abdul Rahman Pazhwak

Abdul Rahman Pazhwak, also Pajhwak (Persian عبدالرحمان پژواک ) ( born March 7, 1919 in Ghazni, † 8 June 1995 in Peshawar, Pakistan) was an Afghan diplomat who served as President of the UN General Assembly.

Journalist

After graduation, he worked as a journalist and in the press department of the Foreign Ministry. Later, he was publisher and editor of the daily newspaper " Islah ". Subsequently he was director of the news agency Bakhter Agance today Agance Etlaati Bakhter was the first news agency of Afghanistan. After that, he was Director General of Press and Information in Afghanistan and President of the Institute for the Promotion of Pashto Language ( " Pashtu Tolana ").

Abdul Rahman Pazhwak summarized the socio-cultural concepts of Pashto together (not as a means of communication, but as in life ).

Diplomat

In 1946 he entered the diplomatic service and was initially Embassy Attaché for Culture and Media at the embassies in the UK and the USA. In 1951 he joined the staff of the Foreign Ministry, where he was responsible among other things for the UN.

After serving as Permanent Representative to the UN, he was Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany and in India. In 1976, he was then ambassador to Britain. However, a position he lost after the communist coup in 1978. Upon his return to Afghanistan, he was placed under house arrest and was allowed to leave until 1982 due to health reasons Afghanistan. He then lived in exile in the United States and since 1991 in Peshawar, Pakistan.

Ascent to the President of the UN General Assembly

In 1958 he was Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations. There he was, among others, in 1963 chairman of the UN Human Rights Commission. In 1963 he was commissioned further by the UN with the improvement of relations between Vietnam and the Buddhist faith. He also represented his country at conferences of the Non-Aligned Movement States.

On September 20, 1966, he was elected to succeed Amintore Fanfani as President of the UN General Assembly. After the Presidency on the fifth special session of 1967 he was replaced by Corneliu Mănescu on September 19, 1967 as President of the UN General Assembly.

Writer

Pazhwak dealt his life to literature, philosophy and social sciences. Among his works as a writer included, among other things, translations of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
