Abdul Zahir (Afghan Prime Minister)

Sharifi Abdul Zahir (* May 3, 1910, † 21 October 1982) was an Afghan prime minister during the reign of King Zahir Shah.

Zahir was born in the province of Laghman. He attended high school in Kabul, studied at Columbia University Medicine and has a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. He became a physician and returned to Afghanistan back to practice there, but ended up in politics. His political Stations include, among other things, health minister, parliament speaker and ambassador in Italy and Pakistan. From June 1971 to December 1972 he was Prime Minister of Afghanistan. A few months after his resignation from this post, Abdul Zahir withdrew from politics.

Zahir was married to Quraisha and had four children. His son Ahmad Zahir was a popular musician. He later lived in Peshawar, Pakistan, where he initiated a campaign for peace in Afghanistan.
