Abdulqawi Yusuf

Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf ( born September 12, 1948 in Eyl ) is a Somali lawyer. He worked from 1981 to 2008 as a senior legal assistant at various subsidiary organs and specialized agencies of the United Nations. In November 2008 he was elected judge of the International Court of Justice, his term of office began in February 2009.

Life

Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf was born in Eyl 1948 completed his legal education at the Somali National University, where he graduated in 1973 graduated as a Doctor of Law ( Laurea di Dottore in Giurisprudenza ). He continued his studies in 1974 at the Hague Academy of International Law and from 1976 to 1977 at the University of Florence, in 1980 he received his PhD at the Institute for International Studies at the University of Geneva in the field of international law.

From 1981, he worked in Geneva as a legal assistant at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD ), where he held various management positions at the beginning of the 1990s. From 1992 to 1994 he was head of UNCTAD representative in New York. In 1994, he joined the Organization of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO ), in which he as a legal adviser and head of the legal department, and then to 2001 as Deputy Secretary-General and Special Adviser worked for African Affairs until 1998. From 2001, he served as legal counsel and director of the Office of International Standards and Legal Affairs at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO ). In addition, he represented his native country or a member of the Somali delegation at various international conferences. In early November 2008, he was elected to the International Court in The Hague by the General Assembly and the UN Security Council to judge, to whom he had previously worked in a case between Djibouti and France as an ad hoc judge.
