Abebe Mekonnen

Abebe Mekonnen ( born January 9, 1964) is a retired Ethiopian long-distance runner, who in the 80s and 90s had great success at the marathon distance.

The nephew of the Olympic champion Abebe Bikila won the 1986 Rotterdam and the Montreal Marathon, the 1987 Paris Marathon, the 1988 Beijing Marathon in 2:07:35 (also his personal best and still valid track record ) and 1989 the Boston Marathon. He also won three times the Tokyo International Women's Marathon ( 1988, 1991, 1993).

In 1986, he finished second at the World Cross Country Championships. A success at the Olympic Games was denied him, however: At the games in Barcelona in 1992 he had to give up the marathon of games in Atlanta in 1996, he came to the 81st place.

Abebe Mekonnen is the runner with the most sub-2 :15- marathons worldwide. 32 times he was able to offer this brand in his career.
