Abel Herzberg

Jacob Abel Herzberg ( born September 17, 1893 in Amsterdam, † May 19, 1989 ) was a Dutch lawyer and writer.

Life

Herzberg was the son of Russian Jews. He studied in Amsterdam and became a lawyer. From 1934 to 1939 he was Chairman of the Dutch Zionist Federation. In 1943 he was captured by the Nazis and deported via Barneveld and the Westerbork transit camp in the concentration camp Bergen- Belsen. On April 10, 1945, he left with the later became known as the Lost train death transport the camp towards Theresienstadt, which was but freed on 23 April 1945 after a 13-day odyssey through Germany in Brandenburg Tröbitz of the Red Army. On June 30, 1945, he returned to his Dutch homeland.

In 1950 he published his book Mesopotamia, in which he reported on his experiences in Bergen- Belsen. Abel Herzberg is the father of the Dutch writer Judith Herzberg.
