Abel Matutes

Life

Matutes was from 1970 to 1971 during the Franco dictatorship Mayor of Ibiza Town. 1977 to 1982 he was a member of the Spanish Senate for Ibiza and Formentera and then to 1985, Member of Parliament. In 1986, he was with the Spanish EU accession European Commissioner responsible for small and medium-sized enterprises, loans and investments and financial instruments in the Delors Commission I. In 1989, he was responsible in the Commission Delors II for Mediterranean and Latin American policy. 1993, he joined the department again and was in charge of Commissioner for Energy, Euratom and Transport, 1994, he handed over his office to Marcelino Oreja. From 1996 to 2000 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain. He was also Vice Chairman of the Employers' Association of the tourism industry in Ibiza.

Since 2002, Matutes is a director of Banco Santander.

Today Matutes is a member of the Supervisory Board of TUI. His company, Grupo Empresas Matutes, since 2004, holds shares in TUI.

Matutes is co-owner of Grupo de Empresas Matutes, a conglomerate of various companies which, inter alia, the Fiesta and palladium hotel group, and shares in shipping companies Trasmediterránea and Balearia belong. He has in Ibiza discos Privilege ( currently the largest discotheque in the world) and Space, various real estate and hotels, the largest construction company on the island. He is one of the most influential people in Ibiza.

Matutes is married and has four children: Carmen, María Estela and Abel. Estela was 2003-2007 Island Councillor with responsibility for buildings, roads and transport. In her tenure, among others fell the highway construction in Ibiza.
