Abel Prize

The Abel Prize (after Niels Henrik Abel ) has been awarded annually since 2003 by the Norwegian Academy of Science as an international award for outstanding scientific work in the field of mathematics. It is endowed with 6 million Norwegian kroner (about 750,000 Euros ). On the occasion of 200th birthday of Abel, the Norwegian Government had set up a foundation for the award of the prize in 2002.

The prize committee consists of five members, which are provided by various Norwegian research institutions. The award ceremony takes place in the presence of the Norwegian king. In contrast to the Fields Medal, there is no age restriction for the winners, so this price an equivalent of the Nobel Prize for something closer than the Fields Medal.
