Abenberg

Abenberg is a city in Middle Franconia district of Roth and is located ten kilometers west of the county town of Roth and about 25 kilometers south-west of Nuremberg.

Geography

Abenberg lies on the northern edge of the Franconian Lake District, saw a large area between the Franconian Heights to the northwest, Nuremberg in the north and the Franconian Alb in the south and east. The small rivers in the city area drained by the Rednitz / Regnitz to the Main.

History

Abenberg 1071 was first mentioned as Abinberch. The county Abenberg arose among the Ottos 1002-1024, the town was founded around 1040 by Wolfram von Abenberg. Within the next 150 years came from the family of Abenberger Hochstiftsvögte of Bamberg, Würzburg's Bishop Reginhard, an abbess to Kitzingen and other high dignitaries. Stilla of Abenberg († 1140 ) was beatified in 1927. At the turn of the 13th century was extinguished the male line of the Abenberger, by marriage came Abenberg around 1236 to the Viscount of Nuremberg and thus to the Hohenzollern. The city was the seat of the Prince-Bishopric of Eichstätt and was from 1500 in the Frankish Empire circle. The Pflegamt was secularized in Bavaria's favor in 1803 and fell in the same year to the Principality of Ansbach (main country comparison Bavaria / Prussia), with which it passed in 1806 (Treaty of Paris, February), finally through exchange to the Kingdom of Bavaria.

During the persecution of witches in the Bishopric of Eichstätt least six women from Abenberg were charged as suspected witches and sentenced to death in 1590.

The Abenberg castle was bequeathed by its last owner in 1959 the city of Frankfurt, but did not accept this gift. In the years 1982-1984 the city Abenberg bought the castle and renovated it from scratch. Today it is the home of Frankish history, the Lace Museum Abenberg and a hotel with restaurant. The castle is used for exhibitions, public and private events.

Incorporations

On 1 July 1971, part of the dissolved municipality Obersteinbach was incorporated whether Gmünd. On January 1, 1972, until then independent municipality Ebersbach was added. Parts of the territory of Aurau followed on 1 July 1972. Integration of Beersbach, Dürrenmungenau and Wassermungenau completed the series of incorporations on 1 May 1978.
