Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery

The Abhayagiri Monastery ( Pali for " fearless mountain ."; Engl Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery ) in Redwood Valley in Mendocino County in northern California is the first of Ajahn Chah's followers founded in the USA Buddhist monastery. It is written in the Thai forest tradition of Theravada Buddhism.

The origins of the monastery date back to Ajahn Sumedho visits Northern California in the early 1980s. 1988 was founded by his disciples the Sanghapala Foundation; Ajahn Amaro in 1990 was the main teacher of the California trailer Chah and Sumedho. The monastery was finally founded in 1995, Ukiah shortly before his death, thanks to the support of the Chan Master Hsuan Hua, abbot of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. It is named after the eponymous temple in Sri Lanka.

In the monastery live about 17 monks, current abbot (as of 2010 ) is Ajahn Pasanno. The monastery includes the Pacific Hermitage branch in White Salmon (Washington).
