Abies fabri

Abies fabri is a species of the genus of fir (Abies ) in the pine family ( Pinaceae ). It is endemic in the Chinese province of Sichuan.

Description

Abies fabri grows as a evergreen tree that can reach the stature heights of up to 40 meters and diameter at breast height of up to 100 centimeters. The scaly bark is gray to dark gray. Young branches have a smooth or hairy, light brown to gray- yellow rind. After two to three years, this brownish gray.

The straight, bright green needles are 1.5 to 3 inches long and 2 to 2.5 millimeters wide. At the needle bottom you will find two white Stomatabänder. The needles are double row at the branch tops and are arranged in a comb shape.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Abies fabri located in the Chinese province of Sichuan. They are found there in the river valleys of the Dadu He and the Qingyi Jiang and on Emei Shan. Other deposits are found in the Daliang Mountains and in Xiaoliang Mountains.

Abies fabri is a tree species of the cool, moist climate. The annual rainfall is often more than 2000 mm. One finds the way at altitudes from 1500 to 4000 meters.

There shall be both pure and mixed stands, with Abies fabri is very shade tolerant. As a socialized tree species often occur the Likiang spruce on (Picea likiangensis ) and the Taiwan Hemlock ( Tsuga chinensis). In the shrub layer is often found different types of rhododendrons (Rhododendron ) and the genus Sinarundaria.

System

Abies fabri is allocated within the genus of fir (Abies ) of section Pseudopicea and the subsection Delavayianae. The first description was in 1902 as Keteleeria fabri Tylden by Maxwell Masters. In 1919, she was transferred by William Grant Craib in the genus Abies.

Varieties

The type is divided into two varieties, which are also sometimes performed as a sub- types:

  • Abies fabri var fabri ( Mast. ) Craib
  • Abies fabri var minensis ( Bord. et Gauss. ) Silba, sometimes as a separate species Abies minensis board. et Gauss. performed.

Use

The timber is used as a timber as well as for making paper. Furthermore, it veneers, railway sleepers, matches and toothpicks are made. The resin obtained from the bark is used as the adhesive in the optical microscopy using.

Threats and conservation

Abies fabri is listed in the IUCN Red List as " not at risk ". It is noted, however, that a re-evaluation of risks is required.
