Abies hickelii

Abies hickelii is a species of the genus of fir (Abies ). It occurs in southern Mexico.

Description

Abies hickelii grows as a evergreen tree that can reach the stature heights of 20 to 30 meters. He forms an irregularly shaped crown. The gray bark is cut into square plates. The slightly hairy bark of the branches is dark brown to reddish. The spherical to slightly ovoid buds are resinous and contain blunt bud scales.

Almost two lines and wide spread is arranged in the branches, at the base of twisted needles have a length from 1.5 to 3.2 centimeters and a width of 1 to 1.5 millimeters. Your tip is often notched. At the needle top, they are glossy dark green and teal colored at the needle base. At the bottom you can find the needle 14 to 16 Stomatareihen.

The cones are about 1 centimeter on a long stalk. The slightly resinous, dark brown to purple brown colored cones are cylindrical, elongated with a length of 7 to 12 inches and a diameter from 3.5 to 7 inches. The 6-7 mm long seeds have a 1.3 -inch-long, orange-yellow wings.

Occurrence

Abies hickelii occurs in the states of Veracruz, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas in southern Mexico.

They are found at altitudes 1650-3000 meters.

System

Abies is hickelii assigned within the genus of fir (Abies ) as the only type of sub-section Hicke Lianae in the section Oiamel. The first description was in 1932 by Fernande flous and Henri Marcel Gaussen in Bulletin de la Société d' Histoire Naturelle de Toulouse, 64:24-30.

Varieties

The species is divided into two varieties:

  • Abies hickelii var hickelii
  • Abies hickelii var oaxacana ( Mart. ) Farjon & Silba occurs near Ixtlan, Oaxaca state. A synonym is Abies oaxacana Mart.

Threats and conservation

Abies hickelii is in the IUCN Red List as "vulnerable" out. The variety oaxacana is in the red list "at risk" as well as out. The main hazard reasons of extensive logging and habitat loss in conjunction with a low stand density are called.
