Abilene is a city and the county seat ( county seat ) of Dickinson County in the U.S. state of Kansas.

Abilene was founded in 1857 by Timothy Hersey as a small stagecoach stop. The name in Hebrew means Abilene city in the plane and was chosen by his wife Eliza. 1867 settled there, the cattle dealer Joseph G. McCoy in the 300 - person village, whose population then grew to over 3,000. Abilene became the first city in the United States, in which a loading station has been set up specially for the cause driven from Texas cattle herds (see also Red River (1948 ) ). From there it went on for the animals by rail, mostly to the Union Stockyards, the central cattle market of Chicago.

After his family moved to Abilene in 1892 where he grew later President Dwight D. Eisenhower on along with his five brothers. After his death on 28 March 1969, the Eisenhower Library in Abilene arose.
