The Abkhazian State University ( Abkhaz Аҧснытәи Аҳәынҭқарратә Унивирситет / Apsnytwi Achwyntqarratu Uniwirsitet; Russian Абхазский государственный университет / Abchasski gossudarstwenny uniwersitet, abbreviated АГУ / AGU) is the only university of Abkhazia. It has its headquarters in the capital Sukhumi. Currently, about 3,000 students are enrolled and nearly 400 teachers are employed.

History

The Abkhaz State University was established by a decision of the Public Education Commissariat of the Abkhazian ASSR on 4 February 1932 as Agro Pedagogical Institute. 1933 originated from the Gorki State Pedagogical Institute Sukhumi, which was remodeled in 1979 by decision of the Ministry of Education of the Georgian SSR to the Abkhaz State University. Founding Rector was Zurab Antschabadse. The University initially consisted of Abkhaz, a Russian and a Georgian Department. The demand of Georgian students to make the Georgian department to a branch of Tiflisser University, led in 1989 to unrest in Sukhumi. After the conflicts in Abkhazia and the de facto independence of the country from exile in 1993 a university was established in Tbilisi. 2006 received the Abkhaz State University by a decree of Abkhaz President officially the status of a self-governing (autonomous ) College.

Rector of the University since 1989 Aleko Gwaramija, professor of physics and mathematics, a member of the Abkhazian Academy of Sciences.

The Abkhaz State University has eight faculties and 41 departments. She is a member of the Association Eurasian universities. The inter-university exchange is restricted to time - also due to the political isolation of Abkhazia - largely due to the post-Soviet space. Russia naturally plays a special role. Since 2011 there is also a partnership with the University of Urbino in Italy.

The university buildings are located at the extreme south-eastern outskirts of Sukhumi.
