Ablation zone

Under ablation is understood in meteorology, the melting and sublimation of snow and ice, often used especially for the mass loss of glaciers.

The Ablationsgradient is here used to denote the measure of the loss of mass of a glacier with increasing altitude. The Ablationsgradient in meters of water per 100 m height difference indicates the amount by which decreases the annual ablation with 100 m increase in altitude.

The ablated volume of water ( a glacier ) in grams per cubic centimeter or in inches of water is called ablation. The ablation volume on the day is to the night as 23: 18

Ablation period is the period in a year in which the melting of snow and ice can take place.

As an example of a characteristic Ablationsform the so-called penitents or the penitents can be used. It is a snow surface, which consists of an array of angle columns, pointing in the direction of the most sun exposure.
