Able seaman

Seaman is the function or job title for a sailor in merchant shipping with more years of education (including Able Seaman ). In English-speaking countries, the equivalent designation able- bodied seaman (AB or A / B ) or short able seaman.

In the German Navy and the navies of other countries, the term sailor is the lowest enlisted rank ( NATO Rank Code OR-1 ).

Historical development

The term sailor goes to the Dutch word back matroos, was probably transformed from the French matelot, via the Old French matenot. He is probably back to the Middle Dutch mattenoot in meaning comrade Matt or sleeping comrade, from which the present-day German -language term sailor was.
