Abona (DO)

Abona is a Spanish wine region (→ Viticulture in Spain).

The denomination of origin is located in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the southern part of the island of Tenerife. The status of a DO received the appellation in 1996. The DO includes vineyards in the municipalities of Adeje, Arico, Arona, Fasnia, Granadilla de Abona, San Miguel de Abona and Vilaflor. At almost 70 % white wines from Listán Blanco, as well as the native varieties Gual and Sabro are produced.

Other DO- origin labels on the island of Tenerife are Tacoronte- Acentejo, Valle de Guimar, Valle de La Orotava and Ycoden -Daute -Isora

Geography

The total 1,995 -acre wine region lies at an altitude 210-1780 MT Sea level. The upstairs vineyards that are located in the municipality of Vilaflor, are among the highest in Europe. The vineyards are situated on the slopes of the 3,715 m high Mount Teide.

The soils

The island of Tenerife was formed about seven to five million years ago by volcanic activity. In low-lying areas in the production area there are loamy soils with limestone and marl a share.

Climate

During earlier than vine training the bush form ( locally called en vaso ) predominated, the winemakers tend now rather to the wire frame education that is locally called en espaldera. In wire frame the education Guyot and Cordon Royal are allowed.
