Abov

Abov ( German Abaujwar / ( Abau ) Neuburg, Hungarian Abaúj, Latin comitatus Abaujvariensis ) is the name of a landscape in Slovakia and also the name of a historic administrative unit ( county / county) in the Kingdom of Hungary.

The area is located about halfway in today's eastern Slovakia and north-eastern Hungary, the Slovak abov name is now used as an unofficial name given to this area.

Location (1882 )

The existing in this form until 1882 county bordered on the north by the county Sáros ( Saris ), to the east and south by the county Semplin, on the southwest by the Borsod County, on the west by the county Torna and to the northwest by the county Zips.

The area extended approximately 20 km along both sides of the river Hernad / Kundert (Slovak Hornád, Hungarian Hernád ) between Košice ( Kassa German, Hungarian Kassa ) and Miskolc (Slovak Miškovec, no longer belonging to ).

Administrative headquarters

Originally there was the administrative seat of the county in forró, then the administrative seats have changed many times, from the late 16th century the administrative headquarters in Gönc and from det mid 17th century, was then in Košice.

History

The county emerged in the second half of the 13th century from the comitatus Novi Castri (named after the castle Abaújvár, Latin Castrum Novum, near the village of Abaújvár located ), which also included the later counties damage resulting therefrom Rosch and Hewesch county and its seat in the castle Castrum Novum had.

Since 1882 ( even temporarily 1785-1790 and 1848-1859 ), the county was then combined with the westerly county to county Tornau Abaujwar - Tornau.
