Abra (province)

Abra is a domestic province in the Cordillera Administrative Region in the Philippines. The population is 234 733 inhabitants ( census May 1, 2010 ) living in 27 municipalities. The provincial capital is Bangued.

Geography

Abra is located in the northwestern part of the Cordillera Central, the northernmost mountain range in the island of Luzon. Your neighboring provinces are Ilocos Norte in the north, Ilocos Sur to the west, Mountain Province to the southeast, Kalinga Apayao and in the East. The largest river is the Abra, its source lies at Mount Data in the province of Benguet. In the west of the province of Cassamata Hill National Park is located.

History

The province was established in 1846 by the Spanish colonial administration as a military administrative district, and was previously a part of the province of Ilocos Sur. After the Philippine Revolution, the first civilian government was installed by the now American colonial administration on August 29, 1901. In February 1905, the province was again a part of the province of Ilocos Sur Abra before finally again a peculiar province was established in March 1917.
