Abram Isaakowitsch Alichanow (Russian Абрам Исаакович Алиханов; * 20 Februarjul / March 4 1904greg in Tbilisi, .. † December 8, 1970 in Moscow) was a Soviet physicist.

Alichanow came from an Armenian -born family. His father was a train driver. In 1928 he received his degree in physics at the Polytechnic Institute in Leningrad.

Alichanow discovered in studies on artificial radioactivity in 1934 with his younger brother Artyom Issaakowitsch Alikhanian ( 1908-1978 ), later one of the founders of the Physics Institute in Yerevan, the emission of electron-positron pairs by highly excited nuclei.

He also did research on cosmic rays and the weak interaction (including the beta decay ).

Alichanow was involved in the development of the first Soviet nuclear reactor (1949 ) and the Soviet atomic bomb. In 1945 he founded and headed the laboratory 3, later the ITEP emerged from the. He headed the institute until 1968.

In 1961, he was much in the construction of synchrotrons first in the Soviet union with a strong focus involved ( at an acceleration energy of 7 GeV ) and he was also involved in the plans for the next generation of particle accelerator in the Soviet Union.

He was a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Alichanow received three times the State Prize of the USSR (1941, 1948, 1953), was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Red Banner of Labor in 1954 and Hero of Socialist Labor.
