Abraham Bloemaert

Abraham Bloemaert ( born December 25, 1564 Gorinchem, Holland, † January 27, 1651 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch painter.

Bloemaert, son of the sculptor and architect Cornelis Bloemaert, met in Utrecht and Paris had to take 1597 as a citizen in Amsterdam and was since 1611 in Utrecht, where he seems to have settled down till his death.

Bloemaert exerted a great influence on Dutch painting. He mediated a certain extent between her and the Flemish school and cultured history, the portrait, genre and landscape.

The numerous incurred by him and woodcuts in chiaroscuro give a rich picture of his artistic endeavor. His coloristic treatment still remembers the mannerism of the 16th century, his drawing is a bit dull, its color colorful.

Works by him are mainly located in the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, but also in the galleries of Berlin and the Louvre in Paris.

Abraham Bloemaert was married to Judith van Already Burgh since 2 May 1592 but the marriage ended childless. On October 12, 1600 married Bloemaert Gerarda de Roij, a brewer's daughter. The marriage produced many children. The sons of Hendrick (1601-1672), Frederick (1614/1617-1690), Cornelis (1603-1692) and Adriaan (after 1609-1666 ) was also a painter.

Bloemaert's grave is in the Utrecht Catherine's Church.
