Abraham Herr Smith

Abraham Herr Smith (born 7 March 1815 to Millersville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, † February 16, 1894 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1873 and 1885 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Abraham Smith visited the Professor Beck's Academy in Lititz and thereafter until 1840, the Dickinson College in Carlisle. After a subsequent law degree in 1842 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started in Lancaster to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1843 and 1844 he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania; in 1845 he was a member of the State Senate. Later he became a member of the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1872, Smith was the ninth constituency of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Oliver James Dickey on March 4, 1873. After five re- elections, he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1885 six legislative periods. Between 1881 and 1883 he was chairman of the Committee on Mileage. In 1884, he was not nominated by his party for re-election.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Abraham Smith practiced as a lawyer again. He died on February 16, 1894 in Lancaster.
