Abraham Jefferson Seay

Abraham Jefferson Seay ( born November 28, 1832 in Amherst, Amherst County, Virginia; † December 12, 1915 in Long Beach, California ) was an American judge and Governor of Oklahoma.

Life

A. J. Seay was the eldest son of Cam and Lucy J. Seay. The family moved to Missouri in 1836, where Seay first attended public schools and later the Steelville Academy. His first job was with the pick and shovel in the construction of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Later he taught in schools and engaged in law and law books.

1861 Seay took part in the Civil War and fought for the Army of the Northern states. There he was when the war ended, Colonel and entered afterwards in the Republican Party. In gratitude for his apparently loyal party work you appointed him an associate judge on the highest court of the Oklahomateretorium and as District Judge of the Third District.

Seay moved regularly through the district and held court. Its territory, which was huge and not very organized, stretched from 98th to 100th Meridian and from Kansas to Texas.

After his term as governor of the only living man remained in Kingfisher and invested in many different business areas. He also worked as a committed Republican and campaign workers in his former district judge. After an accident in 1903 plagued him much suffering and he spent his twilight years with medical care in Long Beach ( California).

Political action

In 1892 he became governor, and actively promoted the local economy. In particular, he was involved in the settlement of Oklahoma and oversaw the opening of hitherto protected Indian lands. He was criticized for his care towards African Americans. So he called for, for example, although continue to white and black segregated schools, but with the same quality education, which also was bestowed the whites.
