History of the Memorial

On July 17, 1916, a memorial was reported as Abraham Lincoln National Park, which was then administered by the War Department. 1933 was the administration over to the National Park Service. In 1939, the memorial was rededicated called into a National Historical Park and Abraham Lincoln National Historical Park. From September 8 1959 to March 30, 2009 it was downgraded into a National Historic Site, before heading back up the old dedication as a National Historical Park in the 200th year of birth of Lincoln.

The foundation stone for the building of the memorial was laid in 1909 for the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's President Theodore Roosevelt; it was completed in 1911 and dedicated by President William Howard Taft. At that time it was believed that the hut at the memorial would be the original.
