Abrasion (mechanical)#Abrasion resistance

The abrasion resistance means the resistance of the solid surface to mechanical stress, friction in particular. It is determined by the surface properties of the materials involved, mainly the roughness and hardness.

In industry, the abrasion resistance is determined by methods such as grinding or sandblasting. The examination may be either mandatory according to DIN or EN standards or be part of a quality control.

Examples: tiles are divided into different classes abrasion resistance, such as " wear 5" (highest resistance to abrasion ), " wear 4" ( high abrasion resistance ) and " wear 3" (average abrasion resistance).

To measure the abrasion resistance of natural stones of the stone specimen is abraded according to a European standard by standard abrasive and measured the abrasion loss. The hardness on the Mohs scale is not suitable for measuring the hardness of natural stone, as it can only be found for the minerals application.
