Abrolhos Archipelago
The Abrolhos are a facility located in the South Atlantic Brazilian archipelago.
Geography and Geology
The Abrolhos are about 70 miles off the Atlantic coast of the Brazilian state of Bahia approximately at the level of the city Caravelas. They are composed of five small volcanic islands
- Santa Bárbara
- Guarita
- Redonda
- Siriba
- Sueste
As well as numerous surrounding rock formations ( reef ) together. It is the largest reef in South America.
On the island of Santa Bárbara Brazil maintains next to a military post and the management of the National Park and to the east an unoccupied lighthouse. All other islands are undeveloped and uninhabited throughout the year.
History
The islands were probably discovered in 1503 by Amerigo Vespucci. Because of the numerous reefs, this region was considered by mariners to be highly dangerous, especially for the earlier wooden ships, as there numerous sunken ships ( wrecks ) prove. The name " Abrolhos " is therefore likely taken on one of the Portuguese language phrase - " abri Vossos olhos - keep an eye on " - be due.
