Abtwil, Aargau

Abtwil ( in local dialect: [ ɑp əl ˑ ] ) is a municipality in the district of Muri in the southeast of the Swiss canton of Aargau. It lies on the border with the Canton of Lucerne.

Geography

It lies at the foot of the southern spur of the Lindenberg, at the transition between the Reuss valley to the east and the valley to the west. About two hundred meters south of the village itself is slightly offset the hamlet Altchilen. The largest part of the municipality is flat to undulating. Only in the north- west the land rises slightly to comb the Lindenberg. On the south is the moss, a small bog.

The area of the municipality is 414 hectares of which 92 hectares of forested and built over 34 hectares. The highest point of the municipality is located on the crest of the Lindenberg at 665 m above sea level, the lowest on the eastern municipal boundary to 500 m asl Neighboring municipalities are Sins in the North and East as well as the High Rain in the West.

History

The area around Abtwil was already inhabited during the Roman period. On the " Heidehügel " There was at that time a villa rustica. To the Roman ruins around the Alamanni hewed two dozen graves in the sand stone floor. The 1860 discovered during construction work tombs were carved exactly to measure the soil. Abtwil belonged in the Middle Ages to the Habsburg Office Meienberg. In 1415 Lucerne conquered the Office Meienberg, but had to return in 1425 to the common possession of the Confederates. From the conquered territories outside the offices a Common rule were formed. After 1742 the old church above the (then not yet discovered ) Alemannic cemetery in the district Altchilen had been demolished and replaced by a new building on the present site, Abtwil 1748 became a separate parish. By 1865 the parish priest all came from the monastery of Engelberg. The basic rule was to 1805 at the St. John Coming in High Rain.

In March 1798 the French invaded Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic. Abtwil was now a municipality in the district of Muri of the short-lived Canton of Baden; since 1803 it belongs to the canton of Aargau. Attractions

On December 31, 2013 958 people lived in Abtwil, the proportion of foreigners was 12.3 %. At the 2000 census, 72.8 % Roman Catholic, and 11.7% were reformed; 2.1% belonged to other faiths. 97.0 % reported German as their main language.

Politics and Law
