Abu Bakar Bashir

Abu Bakar Bashir ( born August 17, 1938 in East Java ) is an Indonesian Islamist.

He co-founded with Abdullah Sungkar in 1973 the union Pondok Ngruki. 1978 were both arrested as members of the command jihad. After her release, she fled to Johor, Malaysia. In 1993, Abu Bakar Bashir and Abdullah Sungkar the Jemaah Islamiyah. After Sungkar's death in 1999, Bashir took over the spiritual leadership of the group, had his power but leave early to younger members. He also founded the Rabitatul Mujahideen (1999) and Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia, the ( 2000).

Bashir was suspected to have been involved in the planning of both the attacks in Bali in 2002 and the attack on the Marriott Hotel in Jakarta in 2003. The court held on 3 March 2005, that he was involved in the conspiracy for planning the Bali attacks, but not from the Marriott attack, and sentenced him to only 30 months in prison. For good behavior, he was released in June 2006.

In 2008 he founded the Islamist organization Jamaah Ansharut Tawheed ( JAT ).

On 9 August 2010, he was arrested by members of the special unit Densus 88 - Bashir was accused of being in conjunction with a new extremist group in the province of Aceh.

In June 2011, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for supporting a training camp for terrorists.
